Alex is one of the most fun and enthusiastic dive guides that I have had the pleasure to meet. His dream of opening a dive shop sadly collided with the beginning of the pandemic so the last two years have not been easy for him. He is currently in the midst of moving his dive shop from Castara to a better location in Parlatuvier which is the next village up the island. So by the time you’re reading this he may have already moved. Alex’s commitment to safe diving was demonstrated as soon as I met him. His dive computer was malfunctioning and he postponed our planned dive until the following day when he was able to repair it or get a replacement. As someone who is still relatively new to diving I appreciated this as opposed to being pressured in to something possibly unsafe by a much more experienced diver. The diving was superb, exciting and relaxing all at once. Impressive rock walls in Englishman’s Bay. The diving in the Castara/Parlatuvier area is relatively under explored and Alex is in the process of discovering, observing and mapping many sites along that part of the coast. So it was cool to be diving somewhat of a frontier. We dove out of a small fishing boat with no level floor or canopy. This was fine for me but may be of concern for anyone with mobility issues. That should be corrected shortly though as he told he will be getting access to a better boat soon combined with the fact that Parlatuvier has a dock, where is is beach access only in Castara. Alex has big plans for his new shop including a classroom, lounge, kitchen and either on-site or nearby accommodations for divers. I hope to be back soon and Alex will definitely be my first choice for diving in Tobago.
